The exhibition “Confidences” takes us into the intimacy of Gérard Uféras’ universe, inviting us to share the magic behind the scenes of great operas and fashion shows, and to discover his passion for art and creation.
Collaborating with the newspaper Libération at its beginning, co-founder of the VU agency in 1986 and then member of the Rapho agency, Gérard Uféras regularly works for the French and international press. Alongside his work as a photojournalist, he has always had long-term personal projects that reveal the depth of a humble, extraordinarily sensitive and particularly generous gaze.
In 1988, during a carte blanche project with Jean-Loup Sieff and Mary Ellen Mark, Gérard Uféras goes for the first time through the artists’ entrance of the Opéra Garnier. It is a revelation. He will spend thirteen years of his life photographing the secret magic behind the scenes of opera theaters across Europe: London, Milan, Moscow, Barcelona, Salzburg…
His taste for the passage from shadow to light, costumes, materials or the challenges of often difficult lighting is reflected in his second major project: L’Etoffe des rêves. Between 1998 and 2000, he went through fashion shows, capturing a gesture, a pout, a face, the curve of a silhouette, a drape, and posed as a witness to the passions that agitate this world of creation and know-how.
Close to Willy Ronis, an admirer of Cartier-Bresson, Gérard Uféras is a deeply humanist photographer, with frames that are always accurate and closest to one’s emotions. Both a storyteller and a magician, he presents us with grace’s secrets.
